Reform MP Lee Anderson has launched a scathing attack on the Home Office after it tweeted that more than 1,000 individuals arrested during recent public disorder events are "criminals" who will "face the full force of the law."

Anderson, who represents Ashfield, expressed grave concerns in a letter to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, describing the statement as potentially "contempt of court" and questioning its legality.

He highlighted the fundamental principle that individuals are innocent until proven guilty, warning that such language could undermine trust in the justice system. Anderson questioned whether the Home Office had verified that those arrested had criminal records before branding them as criminals publicly. He also inquired if all individuals, regardless of offence, would now have their criminal records checked before appearing in court.

Anderson's letter suggests that this move could indicate a worrying trend towards a "two-tier justice system," where assumptions of guilt are made without due process. He demanded clarification from the Home Secretary, asserting that the state's role is not to presume guilt before a fair trial.

In his letter, Anderson concluded that the tweet was not only "inappropriate and unprofessional" but also potentially damaging to the integrity of the judicial process. He called on the Home Secretary to provide answers and to ensure that justice is upheld for all, without prejudice.
